The Healthy Corner Store Initiative
North Carolina has a problem. A food access problem. 1.5 million North Carolinians do not have access to the foods they need to maintain a nutritious diet.
Communities that lack access to healthy foods are disproportionately impacted by diet-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some types of cancer. The Initiative would bring healthy and local food to small stores that already attract customers and provide store owners with the equipment, marketing, research, and training to make selling healthy foods competitive and profitable.
HB 250/SB 296, The Healthy Food Small Retailer/Corner Store Act, passed the North Carolina House in 2015. By asking for support for HB 250 in the 2016 legislative session, you can help secure a $1 million appropriation to help make the Healthy Corner Store Initiative a reality, and provide North Carolinians with the foods they need.
