North Carolina General Assembly Passes State Budget,
Which Includes Funding for the Healthy Corner Store Initiative and You Quit, Two Quit!

Late on Friday, July 1, the North Carolina General Assembly passed the state budget. The budget includes $250,000 for the Healthy Corner Store Initiative and $250,000 for You Quit, Two Quit! The General Assembly then adjourned sine die and will return in January 2017, for legislative long session. The Governor is expected to sign the budget without controversy.

Please contact your legislators and thank them for supporting the Healthy Corner Store Initiative and You Quit, Two Quit. Because session has adjourned, please contact your legislators in their home districts.

The Healthy Corner Store Initiative
The budget includes $250,000 for the creation of the Healthy Corner Store Initiativein North Carolina! (Section 13.4(a)). This funding is a great incremental step in establishing the Initiative in North Carolina, which will increase access to healthy foods in low- and moderate-income communities across the state. This is the first time that state funds have been invested in a program of this kind!

Please contact your legislators in their home districts and thank them for supporting the Healthy Corner Store Initiative.

NCAH looks forward to working in the 2017 legislative long session to secure $1 million in recurring funding for the continuation of the Initiative.

We thank all of our members and partners who have been instrumental in this effort over the past few years. Please keep your eyes open for information about an event to celebrate this momentous occasion!

You Quit, Two Quit
The budget also includes $250,000 for You Quit, Two Quit to help women who are pregnant (or thinking about becoming pregnant) quit smoking.

NCAH is grateful for the efforts of the Child Fatality Task Force in helping to ensure this life-saving program received funding.
