NC Alliance for Health and Youth Empowered Solutions (YES!) Host Advocacy Day at the NC General Assembly With Focus on Healthy Corner Store Initiative, Physical Education and Teen Tobacco Use Prevention

On Wednesday, March 8, more than 80 high school students gathered at the NC General Assembly to talk about the Healthy Corner Store Initiative, physical education, and teen tobacco use prevention, which are NCAH’s primary priorities for the 2017 legislative session. Advocates spoke with their legislators, delivered resolutions of thanks to supporters of the Healthy Corner Store Initiative, and met with Lt. Governor Dan Forest. One of the highlights of the day was the press conference to introduce HB 276, Strengthen Use Tobacco Use Prevention/Funds. Primary sponsors of this bill include Rep. Donny Lambeth (R – Forsyth), Rep. Gale Adcock (D – Wake), Rep. Josh Dobson (R – Avery, McDowell, Mitchell), and Rep. Sam Watford (R – Davidson). The bill allocates $17 million to restore North Carolina’s statewide teen tobacco use prevention programs. These award-winning programs helped significantly decreased teen tobacco use in North Carolina. Unfortunately, funding was reduced starting in the 2011-2012 biennium and there is currently no state funding for tobacco use prevention programs.

Co-sponsors of HB 276 include Reps. Chaz Beasley; Mary Belk; Beverly Boswell; Cecil Brockman; Becky Carney; Jean Farmer-Butterfield; Susan Fisher; Elmer Floyd; Edwards Hanes, Jr.; Pricey Harrison; Yvonne Lewis Holley; Howard Hunter, III; Verla Insko; Marvin Lucas; Grier Martin; Gregory Murphy, MD; Amos Quick, III; Bobbie Richardson; Stephen Ross; Bob Steinburg; Evelyn Terry; Brian Turner; and Michael Wray.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

For the first time in a few years we have a chance to reinstate teen tobacco use prevention programs in NC, but we won’t be successful without you.

NCAH’s only funding for our tobacco initiatives comes from fantastic supporters like you

On March 28, NCAH will be holding a fundraiser to celebrate our 15th year, all we have accomplished so far, and all that we hope to accomplish. We hope to raise $15,000 and we have a ways to go. We hope you will join us.

Even if you can’t make it, please consider making a donation. We rely on your generosity to support our life-saving tobacco use prevention work.

Thanks for all you do for NCAH!
