The NC Alliance for Health sends out Action Alerts during the Legislative Session to encourage and facilitate people's involvement in the tobacco control and obesity prevention movements in North Carolina.

Our aim is to provide you with the most up-to-date information about what is happening with these issues at the General Assembly. Action Alerts will tell you what to say to legislators and when to say it so that we can maximize our efforts. We urge supporters to help us spread the word by forwarding our alerts to friends, family and colleagues who are interested in these important issues.

Take Action

Citizen involvement and mobilization in support of smoke-free places is a vital component to moving members of the NC General Assembly to the day where they will make worksites and public places smoke-free. The NC Alliance for Health encourages grassroots mobilization by sponsoring rallies, sending action alerts and weekly updates during the Legislative Session, and providing materials to keep citizens informed.

The NC Alliance for Health needs people like YOU to take action to protect North Carolinians from exposure to secondhand smoke. You can do this many ways, such as:

• Join the Alliance and get involved
• Become active with one of the Alliance Policy Committees
• Respond to our Action Alerts, which are sent by e-mail during the General Assembly Session
• Forward our Action Alerts and Weekly Briefings to other organizations and individuals interested in this issue
• Get organizations you are involved in to sign on to the NC Alliance for Health resolutions to eliminate secondhand smoke in NC worksites and public places and to define quality physical education in NC's basic education plan.
• Approach your county's board of health or county commissioners to endorse the Resolution
• Write letters to the editor to your local paper
• Use ideas from the letters to the editor and the key points in the resolution and contact your local senator or representatives and ask them to support an increase in the cigarette tax
• Invite an Alliance Representative to come speak to your organization
• Approach candidates for office and asking them to support the Alliance Resolution
• Contact your county House and Senate Representatives
• Learn how a bill becomes law in North Carolina
